The Pursuit of Peace
The United States must come to the peace table in order to negotiate with Iran. The extended ceasefire for next sixty days is welcome step that it has initiated. The warring parties must consider peace to be a higher ideal which must be pursued under the given political circumstances. Peace is a higher political ideal which must be pursued by the United States and Iran. Both the warring parties must come to a conclusion about efficacy of peace and allow their polities to support peace with each other. Peace as a political ideal is higher than war and therefore must be supported by the warring parties. Instead of going to war, peace must be made an abiding condition between the two nations. A negotiated peace settlement would be a good option for the United States to consider. It must give Iran the breathing space that it requires politically, and a face-saver without which it cannot function. The nuclear weapons program must be made a strict no for Iran and International Atomic Energy Agency must be made more responsible for it, rather than the United States. Being a dominant power, the United States does have a responsibility to fulfil the peace agenda, and give UN bodies, like the IAEA, the requisite authority to deal with violation of international norms. IAEA must hold Iran accountable for its nuclear weapons program.
The IAEA is most suitable for the occasion, and should be supported by the United States. At present, US must sign a peace deal and give up on war with Iran and allow IAEA to work its way through to delegitimize its nuclear weapons program. Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapons program in the twenty first century. It must be told to explain its stance to the international community. The international community along with the United States would be in a better position of peace and security if Iran explains its position to them. The quietude that it has become used to should be shed internationally, with the nuclear weapons program and its other reprehensible political aims. The new leadership in Iran must abide by international laws and should not become entitled to flout them as and when they wish. If it feels threatened by a third party then it must make it clear in the United Nations’ General Assembly. Making Iran a nuclear weapons state cannot be allowed, and US alongside the international community must assure the world of a nuclear weapons-free Iran. Peace is the need of the hour, and should be pursued by both the parties. The United States must sign a peace deal and should not make nuclear weapons program as a hindrance as of now. Peace should be pursued wholeheartedly by the warring parties.
