The American Summit
The Trump administration is in talks with China’s President Xi. The summit between the two leaders would discuss salient issues as American sales of arms to Taiwan, and release of Hong Kong’s media tycoon Jimmy Lai. Both are significant problems that the economic adversaries and at times partners face with each other. China is not fully considered as an American partner, it’s more of an adversary that America has helped create in the twenty-first century. The economic miracle that China is often complimented for, is regarded as an American problem and an opportunity. It’s a problem, as China, becomes another competitor to American-made goods, and considered an opportunity, as it makes the world more prosperous for all. Coming back to the summit, the US government would be well-suited to discuss Taiwan’s security and release of Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong. Taiwan should not be needlessly troubled by China, nor should it have the political gall to incessantly threat it militarily. The arms sales to Taiwan sealed in the month of December by the United States would aid Taiwan in building its military and fend off Chinese attacks and threats in the region. China should be circumspect enough and not allow its military to browbeat political relations with Taiwan.
A nation with high economic productivity ought not to be disturbed. China would be more comfortable with peaceful and productive relations with Taiwan rather than military threats and unjust demand for its territory. Taiwan is a sovereign nation and has its own enshrined rights and vows for the values of freedom and democracy. China must learn to respect Taiwan’s sovereignty and not allow its military to use its wherewithal to tarnish the relationship which the two nations should have in the twenty-first century. The US government must also raise the issue of jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai and demand his immediate release. Hong Kong which is ruled by China since the nineties has violated freedom of expression of a media personnel who should have his rights. The abrogated rights must be restored, and media personnel must be given the respite that he rightfully deserves. The freedom of expression must be considered sacrosanct in the world and personnel who have the privilege to exercise it should be given the right to do so. China must intervene in the matter and free the jailed tycoon for his misdemeanors, if any. Hong Kong must not violate freedom of expression and consider itself to be responsible. A responsible nation does not violate freedom of expression, it helps in fomenting it.
