Political Prisoners in Myanmar

The military junta in Myanmar has changed the place of residence for Aung San Suu Kyi. She has been removed from prison and given a house arrest. The United Nations has called it a part of credible political process. Democracy was suspended in Myanmar five years earlier, and all leaders were arrested as political prisoners. The political prisoners must be released immediately and due process should be brought to the attention of the military junta. The junta has denied basic rights to its citizens and has not given any credence to the rule of law. Putting political prisoners behind bars is tantamount to crime, and using Aung San Suu Kyi’s life for political bargains is nothing more than political theatrics. The military junta must pave way for democracy and not use the system for its own political advantages. Myanmar has been politically decaying for more than quarter of the century and should acknowledge the efficacy of democracy. It must give democracy a new opportunity to run the country, rather than use military power to put honourable citizens behind bars. The international community must pay attention to this dire problem and use its leverage to free political prisoners. China too must understand the process of human rights rather than give its tacit support to Myanmar. Human rights are salient as they protect the living rights of all the citizens. China must realize that human rights is not a miscreation to be ignored, but real privileges that can be exercised by citizens to protect their rights against injustices in a society.

Being a communist regime China has paid scant attention to the privileges of human rights. China should be more responsible in the region and not provide military junta a blind sanctuary to run riot in the country. People have their rights which ought to be protected under all circumstances of politics. The same shall be applicable to Myanmar, provided China cooperates with human rights bodies. Myanmar’s military junta must release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners who have been haphazardly detained. The details of the political prisoners are kept under secrecy and all advantages of due process are ignored by the military junta. China must take cognizance of the human rights problem in the region, and allow innocent men and women to live and work freely. The military junta should be restricted till barracks and must not be allowed to run a government. The military cannot run a government of a country, and Myanmar must permit responsible citizens to run its government rather than give the mantle of democracy to the military. China must be put under pressure by the international community. The communist regimes have been quite cumbersome when it comes to human rights problems. They have violated human rights within and have supported states that violate human rights of honourable citizens. Myanmar must release its political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi.
